Kelcy Warren has spent nearly five decades in the energy business, and he does not plan to stop. The executive chairman and co-founder of Energy Transfer, honored in December 2023 as part of the Hart Energy Hall of Fame class, told Hart Energy LIVE that leaving the industry behind would be impossible.

That declaration came during an exclusive video interview tied to Hart Energy’s 50th anniversary celebration, where Warren also extended warm recognition to his fellow Hall of Fame inductees. His tone was reflective, grateful, and characteristically direct.

Gratitude and Perspective

Warren has never been shy about acknowledging the people around him. In past interviews, he has credited his management team and the broader community of energy professionals as integral to his success. His Hall of Fame acceptance carried similar themes, with Warren emphasizing the quality of those he has worked alongside rather than resting on personal achievement.

His own professional record speaks for itself. Kelcy Warren co-founded Energy Transfer in 1996 with Ray Davis, starting with a small natural gas pipeline business in Texas. After more than two decades leading the company’s expansion through acquisitions, infrastructure buildouts, and market pivots, he stepped down as CEO at the close of 2020. Co-CEOs Mackie McCrea and Tom Long assumed daily operations beginning in January 2021, while Warren remained as executive chairman and chairman of the board.

Under Kelcy Warren’s leadership, Energy Transfer grew into a company generating more than $80 billion in annual revenue, operating across approximately 140,000 miles of pipeline, and exporting energy products to more than 90 countries. The company transports roughly 30 percent of U.S. natural gas and petroleum.

The Hart Energy Hall of Fame honor acknowledged the breadth of what Warren built and the durability of the infrastructure that outlasts any single market cycle. His own summation of the matter was simpler: when energy is this deeply woven into a person’s life, stepping away is simply not an option. See related link for more information.
