Michael Polk’s educational credentials include Cornell University and Harvard Business School, but the executive himself has pointed to a Pennsylvania paper mill as one of his most formative classrooms. That combination elite academics and blue-collar factory experience laid the foundation for a corporate career that spanned Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, Unilever, and Newell Rubbermaid.
Polk grew up as the child of first-generation American parents and developed strong interests in mathematics and the natural sciences. He built a weather station at home and weighed a future in meteorology before deciding his real strength lay in applied mathematics. Cornell’s College of Engineering offered a program in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, and Polk enrolled, studying how mathematical modeling could optimize manufacturing systems and service flows.
Lessons from the Mill
After graduating in 1982, Polk did not head straight into a corporate marketing role. He accepted a supervisor position at a Procter & Gamble paper mill in northeastern Pennsylvania, overseeing one of seven papermaking machines. The work involved rotating shifts and a steep learning curve in a world far removed from academic theory. He has described the experience as one of the most instructive of his career, teaching him about the interdependence of roles in complex systems and the importance of genuine respect for every level of an organization.
That hands-on grounding preceded his Harvard MBA, which accelerated his transition into brand management and general management. Kraft Foods came next, then Unilever, where he eventually led all Americas operations from 2006 to 2010 and then moved to London to oversee Global Food, Home and Personal Care.
The Newell Years and Beyond
At Newell Rubbermaid, Michael Polk Newell Brand served as CEO from 2011 to 2019, growing the company from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion in net sales and completing 35 acquisitions and divestitures. Post-Newell, he took on the CEO role at Implus LLC under Berkshire Partners, applying the transformation approach he has refined across decades of executive leadership.
