Recognition for Dr. Andrew Jacono’s humanitarian surgery has come from advocacy groups, Congress, and national television. Each honor points to work he has done far from the cosmetic procedures that fill his Park Avenue schedule.
The earliest listed came in 2006. The Center for the Women of New York presented him with a “Good Guy” Award for his advocacy and pro bono contributions. U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy also formally commended him in the Congressional Record, citing his contributions to women’s welfare through surgery and charity.
The Work Behind the Honors
These awards trace back to his support for domestic violence survivors. Dr. Andrew Jacono is senior advisor to FACE TO FACE, a project of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery that offers free surgery to people whose faces carry scars from abuse. He has completed reconstructions for more than 100 survivors through the program.
He also chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES for nine years. The annual benefit raised support for survivors of domestic violence.
National audiences learned about his work through Facing Trauma, a reality documentary that aired in 2011 on Discovery Fit & Health and later on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The series followed him through reconstructive operations on abuse survivors and other trauma patients.
Service Overseas
His record abroad is just as long. Through Healing the Children, the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) Foundation, and THAI Children, he has operated on more than 750 children in developing regions. He usually leads two missions a year, treating cleft lip and palate, microtia, facial tumors, and burn scars.
Professional organizations have also given him positions of trust. He is Fellowship Director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Section Head of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at North Shore University Hospital.
Awards tell only part of the story, though. The more telling figures are the patient counts: over 100 survivors and over 750 children who received care they likely could not have obtained otherwise. Read this article for more information.
