It was founded in 2012 in response to the Princess’ death, and its founders intended to spotlight human kindness, courage, social commitment, and the need for urgent action at a time when the world seemed to be in danger of forgetting. The Awards are inspired by Princess Diana’s belief that “the things that unite us as a world far outweigh those that divide us.” The Award Academy founded the Diana Award in partnership with the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, an independent UK charity set up to perpetuate the memory of Diana and support the causes so close to her heart. The first Diana Award was presented to Catherine Roberts – CEO of Co-operative Group, in 2012.
