Raffaele Riva, a leading researcher in the field of sustainable development and education, is one of the few members of the academic community who has comprehensively embraced a multidisciplinary approach to sustainability. Riva’s work bridges business, economics, engineering, and sociology and focuses on issues such as climate change.

Achievements of Raffaele Riva

An engineer by training, he has a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York, where he studied with Nobel Laureate Wassily Leontief. He holds an MSc degree in Sustainable Development from Imperial College London, followed by a year at Harvard University (1999-2000), where he was awarded a prestigious award for his doctoral thesis. At Imperial College Londonv, he was a Fellow in Sustainable Development and Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities. In 2007 he was Visiting Professor at École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (France), where he teaches sustainable development and management for cleaner transport technologies.

Riva has also been Visiting Professor at the Academy for Educational Development (Washington, D.C.), University of Calabria (Italy), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, University of New South Wales (Australia), and Grenoble Ecole de Management (France). He is currently Dean of the School of Engineering at the Università per Stranieri di Siena in Perugia.

His research interests include sustainable development and economics, climate change and engineering, sociotechnology, and sociology. He has made several contributions to elaborating an econometric model of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These have been published in international journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production or Scientometrics. He is one of the most quoted Italian experts on climate change, carbon markets, and emissions trading. He has also published extensively on intangible capital and sustainability reporting by companies.

Raffaele Riva is Honorary Professor at Imperial College London, where he founded the Imperial College Centre for Social Sustainability in 2008. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Italian Peninsula in Forlì-Cesena. He runs a research team at the Sapienza University of Rome Faculty of Engineering. He lectures extensively on sustainable development, carbon markets, and climate change.

In 2009 Riva was invited by the World Bank to contribute to “Modelling Social Development Goals – Business as a Viable Agent” at the “The Future of Sustainable Development,” organized by President Barack Obama in June 2009. See related link for additional information.
